Blogging. You know it’s a good idea. You’ve seen the moderate and immense success that bloggers can have. You’ve thought “hey, I can do that.” Yet you’re hesitant to start your own and you’re not sure why.
Maybe it’s time to think about it some more. After all, blogging can be an immensely rewarding experience if it’s done right. However, before you get started, consider these 3 points. Perhaps they’ll help guide you in the right direction!
1. You have something interesting to say
Many blogs are basically carbon copies of one another. They discuss the same topics, give the same advice and information, and are completely unoriginal. They’re boring to read and quickly fade. However, if you can deliver information such as recipes, DIY/crafting, or financial guidance from a unique or entertaining perspective–or, even better, a perspective that’s never been done before–then, yes. Start a blog. The blogosphere needs you.
2. You like to write (and you’re good at it, too)
Good writing is essential to having a successful and engaging blog. If you can effectively communicate your points with few grammatical errors, then blogging might be for you. However, if you’re a good writer, but you don’t like to write, maybe you shouldn’t start a blog. Because in addition to writing well, you have to like to do it. Otherwise, it’s going to be a waste of your time.
3. It will help your business
Another good reason for starting a blog is to attract potential clients. If you own a company, are a freelance writer/photographer/other creative professional, or offer consulting services, a blog is a chance to show your expertise. It is an effective method to showcase your work, your creativity, your services, and your skills. It’s sort of like an online resume, but better and more comprehensive. A blog is wonderful way to get your name out there and create a network to possibly drum up business.
Now, at this point, you’re probably thinking “yes, blogging is totally for me!” And that’s wonderful. But before you make the commitment to do this, it’s important to understand one thing–do not enter into blogging with the expectation that you will become rich, famous, or both. Despite what you may see in the news or in bookstores, the number of bloggers who become successful authors or make ridiculous amounts of money from their sites and products is actually very few. It is hard to make money blogging (we’ll cover this in depth later on). Don’t be discouraged–it’s very possible. But it is hard, tedious work to do so. And it won’t come fast or easy.
If you’re entering into blogging for the sole purpose of making a quick buck, then perhaps blogging is not for you. However, if you’re entering into blogging because you like to write, have something interesting to say, and you’re willing to put in the work (and maybe make some money in the process), then welcome aboard! You’re in for quite the trip.
